In ancient times in the East of East Java Province, there is a large kingdom ruled by a just and wise king. The king has a son named Raden Banterang. Raden Banterang’s penchant is hunting. Raden Banterang accompanied by several companions set off in to the woods. When Raden Banterang walked alone, He saw a deer crossed in front of him. He immediately chase deer until deep into the forest. He was separated from his retinue.
He
lost track of his quarry. The deer was not found. He arrived in a very clear
river water. Suddenly, Raden Banterang surprised the arrival of a beautiful
girl.
The
beautiful girl named Surati from Klungkung kingdom. She was in that place for
saved herself from enemy attack. Her father had died in defending the royal
crown. Raden Banterang helped and took her back to his palace. Soon they were
married built a happy family.
One
day, Surati walked around outside the palace. “Surati,Surati”. Calling a man
dressed in rags. He is Surati’s brother named Rupaksa. He asked his sister
for revenge, because Raden Banterang had killed his father. Surati didn’t help
her brother and refuse it. But, Rupaksa gave Surati a headband. He wanted that headband should be saved in the bottom of Surati's bed.
On that time, Raden
Banterang was hunted in the forest. His eyes suddenly started by the arrival of
a man dressed in rags. He said that Surati would killed Raden Banterang with a
headband.
Raden
Banterang went back to the palace. He discovered a headband in his wife room.
Well, before his life is threatened, Raden Banterang first wanted to harm his
wife in a river. Surati explained that if the river water became clear and
fragrant then she was innocent, However if it remained cloudy and foul odor
then she was guilty. Raden Banterang thought her speech was ridiculous.
Alongside that, Surati jumped into the river and disappeared.
Not
along ago, there was a miracle. Fragrant scent spread around the river. And
river water became clear. Saw the incident, how sorry Raden Banterang. He
lamented the death of his wife, and regretted his folly. But it was too late.
Since then, the river becomes fragrant. In
the Java language called Banyuwangi. Banyu means water and Wangi means
fragrant. Banyuwangi’s name later became the name of the city of
Banyuwangi.
